System Restore, scanning for malware, and the Update Troubleshooter all failed to fix the problem. It is great. So you have to consider whether $119 for a Windows 10 license is really worth it. I opened a cmd window (as administrator) in the new protected folder (C:\42c85776e1df4d1b8b5495) and did a directory to find the *.xml file, which is the command file for the Package Manager

I currently have Windows Vista Home Premium on my computer. Computers are expensive. Still considering upgrading? One caveat in using the pkgmgr method is that I'm pretty sure the KB didn't show up in the list of installed updates until I applied subsequent updates "the normal way"

I have tried again and it just goes to a microsoft community help page but there is no download for the fixit tool Andy D. Most of this seems to freeze around 90% so you might try disconnecting all external devices and use the keyboard and keypad that is native to the laptop. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft handles people not upgrading after July 29. But, even then, you'd probably want to consider replacing that aging hardware anyway.

If you are on Vista, you have some time before your PC becomes completely unsupported.
