If in VM how much resources you have allocated to the Kali VM?

If so, maybe you're allocating too much resources for the virtual machine, not leaving enough for the real thing to run. I've just googled this and found someone who had identical issues and fixed it by doing a complete reinstall of Kali. journalctl shows nothing around the time of the freeze (after a reboot). I don't even know how to look for the cause of the error.
